Sugarloaf Mountain is the highest peak in Arizona’s Hummingbird Springs Wilderness, rising from the arid Tonopah Desert in northwestern Maricopa County. About sixty-five miles west of Phoenix and ten miles northwest of the Belmont Mountains, it stands within a sparse desert region where the Hummingbird Springs Wilderness borders the Big Horn Mountains Wilderness. The two wilderness areas are divided only by a jeep trail leading to Hummingbird Springs. Local washes drain into Tiger Wash, which runs southwest along the southeast side of the Harquahala Mountains before joining Centennial Wash on its course toward the Gila River.
