Beginning in 1864, more than 340,000,000 tons of iron ore were shipped from this port by the end of the Ore Centennial Year 1964. The Chicago and North Western Railway Company, which handled iron ore for 100 years, built the large dock on the north shore and was recognized as Escanaba's founder and a contributor to the nation's strength.
