Minneapolis Shoal Light Station is an offshore lighthouse in northern Green Bay built to guide shipping to Escanaba after vessel routes shifted south of Peninsula Point and reduced the usefulness of the older Peninsula Point Light. Funding for the new light was approved in 1932, construction finished in 1934, and the light began operating in 1935; it was automated in 1979 and still serves navigation. Unlike a simple tower, it is a large reinforced-concrete, octagonal station with an integral keeper’s house on a high square pier. Its unusual offshore design and role in Green Bay navigation led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
