The name "Breaks" came from the break in Pine Mt. formed by the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River as it carved a 1000 ft. deep gorge on its way to the Ohio River. This natural feature, visible from the path to the Clinchfield Overlook, is often called "The Grand Canyon of the South." Elevation here is 1978 ft.
