On July 4th, 1803, Thomas Jefferson instructed Meriwether Lewis that the object of the mission was to explore the Missouri River, and such principal stream of it as, by its course and communication with the waters of the Pacific Ocean, might offer the most direct and practicable water communication across the continent.
