Born in Uniontown on December 31, 1880 and known as “Flicker” during his youth, George Catlett Marshall became General of the Army and Chief of Staff, organized the Allied victory in WWII, later served as Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense, received the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of the contribution of his Marshall Plan to the economic recovery of war-ravaged Europe, and died in Washington, D.C. on October 16, 1959.
