Holmes County State Park in Mississippi, about 6 miles southwest of Durant off U.S. Route 51, developed from 1935 through the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of the effort that created the state’s first nine state parks during the Great Depression. Centered on 45-acre English Lake and 14-acre Odum Lake, it combines fishing, camping, picnicking, shelters, and a boat launch with lasting historical value. Its early 1930s rustic-style buildings, designed to blend with the landscape, reflect New Deal-era state and federal programs that used park construction to provide employment during severe economic hardship.
