Ella Graham Agnew, the first women extension agent for Virginia and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was born and buried nearby. In 1910 she organized tomato and canning clubs in Halifax and Nottoway Counties. These clubs were forerunners of 4-H and Extension Homemaker Clubs. A pioneer in rural education, her successes opened doors for thousands of girls, women, their families and communities.
