On November 1, 1795, George and Catherine Long deeded the Commons to the inhabitants of New Berlin as a common grazing area. Features of the Commons area included the Mill Race, Mill, Mill House, Generator House, Wooden Dam, Flow-By, Little Goose Island, Goose Island, ice harvesting by Henry Solomon, the site of medicine shows and Hummel's Sawmill, access roads, the Walnut Tree, E.E. Solomon's Barn, the Old Swimming Hole, and the Covered Bridge.
