In 1738, water diverted from Pequea Creek through the head race, or canal, powered an undershot water wheel inside the mill. Water turned that wheel until 1889, when two water turbines began providing power. A turbine made by the Christiana Iron Works replaced the old wheel in September of 1889 and remained in use until the mill ended active commercial milling in 1928.
