Edward Decker, Kewaunee County's most influential early political and business leader, built his impressive home here, nicknamed "The White House," from lumber cut from some of the 10,000 acres of timber he owned nearby. Its interior was filled with curiosities he collected during journeys around the world, and the house became the social gathering place for the Casco area. Decker was deeply involved in starting many local businesses, including railroads, banks, and newspapers. In 1909 he gave his collection to the county, and many of its articles are now displayed at Kewaunee County's Historical Museum in the city of Kewaunee. After his death in 1911, the home passed through many owners, was eventually used as an apartment house, and was destroyed by fire in 1962. Casco, Wisconsin, took its name from Decker's birthplace of Casco, Maine.
