Hermit Peak, a mountain in northern New Mexico’s San Miguel County within the Santa Fe National Forest, is closely tied to Giovanni Maria de Agostini, an Italian religious recluse who lived in a cave on its southeast side from August 1863 to May 1866. Perched on a narrow ledge about one hundred feet below the summit rim and accessible only from above, the cave was so cramped that he could not stand upright, and he built a rock wall at its entrance for protection. The site later drew pilgrims, and the peak remains notable for hiking, religious history, and frontier history. In 2022, the surrounding area was heavily affected by the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire.
