Industry
The stately Miller's House was built circa 1809 in the Federal style. For more than a century it was home to the families who operated Colvin Mill Run. Philip Carper of Frederick, Maryland, bought the property in 1811, though it is not known whether he and his family ever lived there. More is known about the Millard family, who lived in the house from 1883 to 1934. Addison and Emma Millard ran the mill with help from several of their 20 children. The two-story home has two bedrooms upstairs and two rooms on the first floor on either side of a central hallway. Its downstairs rooms reflect the 1810s and 1890s and offer a glimpse into the lives of these two milling families and the many changes in technology, family, and society that occurred during the 19th century.
