Founded in 1896 to create an institution “for the benefit of all,” the Worcester Art Museum opened in 1898 on land and with funding provided by Stephen Salisbury III. Its collection grew from plaster casts, Japanese prints, drawings, and books into more than 38,000 works spanning antiquity to the present, including Roman mosaics, European and American painting, and a major arms and armor collection acquired in 2013. The museum expanded through successive additions, notably the 1930s Renaissance Court and the transplanted 12th-century French Chapter House. It has also faced art theft, pursued conservation and education, and more recently examined the provenance of objects in its care.
