Marcus Whitman, M.D., was a missionary to the Cayuse Indians from 1836 to 1847, a patriotic leader in establishing the claim of the United States to Oregon from 1842 to 1844, and a martyr of an Indian massacre in 1847. His was the first wagon to cross the Rocky Mountains.
