The Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site preserves Poe’s only surviving Philadelphia home, where he lived in the Spring Garden neighborhood from early 1843 to about April 1844 with his wife, Virginia, and Maria Clemm. Philadelphia was his most prolific period: from 1838 to 1844 he produced much of the work that established his reputation, including 31 stories and major criticism, with works such as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, and The Gold-Bug associated with those years. Restored as a museum in the 20th century, the house is now a National Historic Landmark operated by the National Park Service.
