Lumberman, a three-masted schooner wreck in Lake Michigan off Oak Creek, Wisconsin, preserves an important example of a working vessel from the Great Lakes lumber trade. Built in 1862 at Blendon's Landing, Michigan, the wooden-hulled schooner spent about thirty years carrying lumber, bark, and shingles from Lake Michigan logging settlements to markets such as Chicago. On April 6, 1893, while sailing from Chicago to Whitefish Bay to pick up ties, it was overtaken by a fast-moving storm and sank. Though some equipment and personal belongings were salvaged, the hull remains largely intact. Its unusual double centerboard makes the wreck especially valuable to marine archaeologists.
