In 1880, two wooden buildings stood here, and in 1900 they were replaced with a brick structure. Its signal equipment included a Browne 1st Class Auto Compressed Air Siren driven by a Hornsby-Akroyd engine, two copper trumpets still in place above the doors, and a Crosby Automatic Time Signal set for 3 seconds out of every 30. The horn was first sounded on Jan. 26, 1901, during a heavy snow storm. In 1964, the U.S. Coast Guard took it out of service and removed the signal equipment. In 1995, the Horn House Restoration Committee, headed by Richard Tobias and Carolyn Harvey, restored the building.
