The Wilson Museum in Castine, Maine, grew from the geological collections of Dr. John Howard Wilson and from land donated in 1921 by his mother, Cassine Cartwright Wilson. Wilson, who came to Castine in 1891 and later earned a PhD in geology from Columbia University, helped shape the museum’s scientific focus. Its holdings span natural history, prehistoric artifacts from the Americas, the development of tools in Europe and Africa, and cultural materials from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, along with weapons, ship models, and Castine archival records. Designed by Milton See & Son, the main building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and later expansions added three historic structures.
