Fort Point Light stands at Stockton Springs on Cape Jellison, where Penobscot Bay meets the Penobscot River, and has guided vessels since 1835 as Maine’s first river light. Authorized in 1834, the station was built on land bought from William Clewley, its first keeper, and its present lighthouse and keeper’s house date from 1857. The station stayed active as its lighting and fog-signal technology changed over time, yet it still uses a rare fourth-order Fresnel lens. Preserved within Fort Point State Park alongside ruins of Fort Pownall, the site remains an active navigational aid and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
