Amagansett National Wildlife Refuge is a 36-acre protected coastal area on Long Island’s south fork along the Atlantic Ocean, established in 1968 and managed within the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex. It is significant for preserving fragile shore habitat, especially the region’s increasingly scarce secondary dunes. Within its compact double dune system are ocean beach, primary and secondary dunes, swales, fens, cranberry bogs, and oak scrub, supporting rare plants including several orchids. Seasonal wildlife is diverse, from winter waterfowl and owls to migrating shorebirds and raptors, while late spring and summer bring nesting piping plovers and protected terns. The refuge also supports the eastern hognose snake.
