What is now Plain Street once crossed the sawmill pond at the Daniel Bullock-Samuel Baker sawmill site. On a cold New Years day in 1830, fourteen new converts to the nearby Oak Swamp Baptist Church were baptized by immersion in the pond through a hole cut in fourteen inches of ice.
