Near Wilkesville in southeastern Ohio, the Ponn Humpback Covered Bridge spanned Raccoon Creek and became one of the state’s most distinctive covered bridges because of its pronounced arched “humpback” profile. After earlier crossings at the site were replaced and one burned by an arsonist in 1874, county officials funded a new bridge that was completed within a year under Martin McGrath and Lyman Wells. Built with a Burr arch truss on sandstone abutments, its unusual camber helped it cross the creek’s deep gorge without a central support. Later preserved as a tourist attraction, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 before an intentionally set fire destroyed it in 2013.
