On March 30, 1863, a USA force of 1,250 under General Q. A. Gillmore overtook 1,550 Confederate cavalry under Gen. John Pegram here, and a five hour battle resulted. The CSA was driven from one position to another and withdrew during the night across the Cumberland. The CSA suffered 200 killed, wounded, and missing, and the USA 30. On a nine day expedition into Ky., the CSA had captured 750 cattle and took 537 across the river.
