The area west of Floresville was one of the largest ranches in the cattle-driving era. During the 1700s and 1800s, as prime cattle ranch land, it dominated the pre-Wilson County economy and served as a gathering point where small herds were combined into larger herds for trailing north. In 1731, the meadowland west of the San Antonio River belonged to Mission Espada, with ranch headquarters at the compound of Rancho de Las Cabras. In 1874, John F. Camp purchased and began developing the prairie ranch land. By 1904, his ranch had grown to about 10,000 acres and was sold to S.V. Houston, H.S. Tom, and William Green. These new owners developed the land by dividing it into smaller tracts for settlers from surrounding counties, and the small, prosperous Camp Ranch community, named for John F. Camp, began to develop as twenty families moved there. To encourage further growth, the new landowners built a one-room schoolhouse called Green School, and later a larger Camp Ranch School was built. Other community features included Evergreen Cemetery, a dance platform, the Evergreen Shooting Club, and a baseball field. Around 1912, resident Charley Boening added a filling station, garage, general repair shop, and grocery store. Although many physical reminders of the town have disappeared, Evergreen Cemetery remains as a link to the heritage of the Camp Ranch community.
