Woldumar Nature Center welcomed all learners, including visually impaired students who experienced nature through the sounds, smells, and textures of the pond, lagoon, and woods. Its beehives produced large amounts of honey over the years, often tended by child beekeepers, and one especially abundant harvest in 1968 yielded more than a thousand pounds. Conservation efforts included a heritage garden beside the Moon Cabin that replicated pioneer life with non-genetically modified seeds, and harvested plants were hung from the cabin rafters to dry. In 1970 and 1971, Michigan's first lady, Helen Wallbank Milliken, wife of Governor William G. Milliken, visited to teach students about caring for the environment. Woldumar was honored in 1971 as one of eleven Environmental Education Centers in the United States, a designation that gave the property permanent environmental protections. In 1972, it was the only organization of its kind invited to the United Nations' first global Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden, where director Richard Snider discussed its educational conservation efforts.
