Built in 1903 for George Carter, Citrus County's third sheriff, this house was the first in Inverness to have a bathroom and was one of the first 13 buildings there to be wired for electricity when it came to Citrus County in 1913. Carter was suspended by the Governor and investigated for alleged misconduct in not preventing the lynching of a black man accused, but not tried, in the killing of local resident Robert Russell; his removal caused an uproar among citizens who believed he had been treated unfairly, and he was later reinstated. Clinton D. Shultz, who had partnered successfully with J.L. Connell in agriculture and mining, later raised his family here. Shultz's daughter, remembered as Miss Virginia, married longtime County Clerk of Courts Francis Cowboy Williams. The Mitchells later owned the house and offered room and board there. George and Carol Derewenko and Joe and Linda Bega purchased and restored the house in 1986, and in 2003 the building was occupied by the St. Petersburg Times.
