Roy Lake State Park in northeastern South Dakota lies about three miles southwest of Lake City and occupies two separate sections along Roy Lake, making the water and shoreline the focus of the park. Open year-round, it serves visitors with camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, and boating, and its beaches are among its chief attractions. The lake’s name has more than one local origin story. One tradition says it recalls a dog named Roy that drowned there, while another attributes the name to an early pioneer family called the Roys or Rois.
