Andrew Jackson Fisk enlisted in the Second Minnesota Cavalry, Company A, when he was fourteen. Two years later, he began serving as quartermaster sergeant at Fort Wadsworth, later named Fort Sisseton. On Wed. Oct. 25, 1865, he wrote that his company was ordered to Fort Wadsworth, that the men felt badly about the order because it seemed as though it was going out of the world again, and that it was a soldier's duty to obey orders. His experiences were those of a soldier stationed at a prairie fort, reflecting military life on the prairie in the 1800s.
