The brick school built here in 1935 consolidated ten rural districts between the Santee and Black Rivers into a single district. The school was dedicated in 1936 by Gov. Olin D. Johnston and state superintendent James H. Hope, with J. H. Felder as county superintendent. Williamsburg High School, built on ten acres, featured fifteen classrooms, a 500 seat auditorium, and a gymnasium. The school’s enrollment of 500 in grades 1-11 was said to be the largest of any consolidated school in South Carolina when it opened. Its first graduating class, the Class of 1936, numbered only six graduates. Grade 12 was added in 1948. A new high school was built next to the 1935 school in 1956, and a new gymnasium replaced the 1935 one in 1964. Both schools closed in 1983.
