The Burchfield Homestead in Salem, Ohio, was the boyhood home of artist Charles E. Burchfield, one of America’s leading watercolorists. Before his career gained wider recognition in upstate New York, he grew up in this house and absorbed the surroundings that later shaped much of his art. Many of his paintings drew on scenes visible from its windows, and the house and neighborhood have remained largely unchanged since his childhood. That rare survival gives the place exceptional value for understanding his work. After fundraising and restoration, the home opened as the Burchfield Museum in August 1999, shortly after its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
