Just downriver from the Joan Marchand Bridge stood the Evansville Shipyard, which constructed L.S.T.s, or Landing Ship Tanks, and 35 other vessels during World War II. Upriver is the L.S.T. 325, the last navigable LST in existence and one of few remaining examples of this class of ship. The Joan Marchand Bridge, built by the Pittsburgh Bridge Company in 1891, was the third bridge at this location. With a span of 198 feet, it is the longest and oldest single-span steel truss bridge in Indiana, and the foundations of the previous two bridges can still be seen along the banks of Pigeon Creek. During extreme winters, including 1913 and 1936, ice piled up at the bend of the Ohio River with such force that residents could walk across the ice-covered river all the way to Kentucky.
