Construction of St. John’s Episcopal Church began in 1849 and was completed and consecrated in 1856. The structure is an example of Gothic Revival architecture reflecting the “English” movement. The church’s bell tower was added in 1905. In 1974, the building became home to the Phelps Community Memorial Library, where it remained until 2005. Today it is home to the Phelps Art Center. The building was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 7, 1978.
