Chief Shipshewana and his band of Pottawattamie Indians were removed from this reservation on Sept. 4, 1838, and escorted to Kansas by a company of soldiers. One year later, the heartbroken chief was allowed to return to his old camp grounds on the banks of Shipshewana Lake, where he died in 1841. In Indian language, Shup-She-Wah-No means to have a "Vision of a Lion."
