Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science
Science & Tech
Miami’s main science museum grew from the Junior Museum of Miami, founded in 1950 with donated materials and volunteer labor, into a larger institution that later occupied a long-time home in Coconut Grove. Expanded in 1966 with the Space Transit Planetarium, it became well known through public programs such as Star Gazers with Jack Horkheimer and events like the Miami Underwater Festival. After Phillip and Patricia Frost donated $35 million for a new facility, the museum moved downtown and opened its current home in 2017. The complex combines exhibition galleries, the Frost Planetarium, and a major aquarium with exhibits centered on South Florida’s marine and wetland environments.
