Hascall’s 2d Division of the 23d Army Corps, Union, came by way of Manning’s Mill and reached Kolb’s schoolhouse, the site of Mount Zion Church, at 2 p.m., where it joined its left to the right of Williams' 1st Division of the 20th Army Corps at the McAdoo-Oatman house on Powder Springs Road. Hascall placed three brigades on high ground southeast of the road. Skirmishers, supported by the 14th Kentucky, seized a ridge east of the Valentine Kolb house and stubbornly held it until they were forced to withdraw. The left of Stevenson’s Confederate Division, after dislodging the 14th Kentucky, advanced toward Hascall’s line but was driven back.
