Sumterville Methodists began holding services in the Courthouse in 1823. Land was purchased on the outskirts of town and the first church was dedicated in 1827, then sold to the Roman Catholics. Two acres of land across the road were purchased and a second church was dedicated in 1848. In 1851, through a petition by members, the S.C. Methodist Conference made it a station church. The congregation has been vitally interested in local and foreign missions, and the Women's Missionary Society sponsored its first missionary to China in 1892. The church also sponsored several new churches. In 1912, First Methodist Episcopal Church, South, changed its name to Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The present church, Trinity United Methodist Church, is the fourth church built on this site.
