The Homestead Act of 1862 affected millions of lives in the United States and across the world, and Homestead National Monument of America exists to document and present these powerful stories of transformation. The Homestead Heritage Center keeps these stories relevant in an ever-changing world. Its unique westward-pointing roofline was designed to resemble a single bottom plow moving through the sod, representing the Homestead Act. Like the way sustainability was a way of life for early homesteaders, the facility is constructed of local and sustainable materials to reinforce the homesteader story. Today, more than 93,000,000 descendants of homesteaders have stories to tell, memories to share, and much to discover about times and ways of life that challenged and changed the nation and world.
