Wythe County covers 479 square miles and was formed in 1789 from Montgomery; it was named for George Wythe, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and the New River flows through it. Bland County covers 360 square miles and was formed in 1861 from Wythe, Tazewell, and Giles; it was named for Richard Bland, a revolutionary leader, and is rich in coal.
