Chicopee Memorial State Park in Chicopee, Massachusetts, occupies a 562-acre landscape that began as the Cooley Brook Reservoir and watershed, developed to supply the city’s water through reservoirs built in 1896, 1912, and 1926. During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps reinforced the reservoir, planted trees, and created roads, trails, and bridges that shaped later public use. The state assumed control in the 1960s, adding recreational and administrative facilities. Today the former reservoir pond supports swimming and restricted fishing, the surrounding land offers trails and winter recreation, and the property also serves as District Headquarters for the Massachusetts Bureau of Forest Fire Control, reflecting both its utility and recreational history.
