Galveztown was an old Spanish town at the junction of the Amite River and Bayou Manchac. It was settled by Anglo-Americans from 1776 to 1778, who sought Spanish refuge from the American Revolution, and by Canary Islanders (Islenos). The town was named for Spanish Governor Bernardo de Galvez and was abandoned by 1810.
