Blue Streak at Cedar Point is recognized by American Coaster Enthusiasts as an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark, a designation reserved for rides of historic significance. Beginning in 1959, Cedar Point was undergoing a significant renaissance after nearly being redeveloped for housing, transforming into a major regional amusement resort destination with a new midway of rides and attractions. For the 1964 season, the Philadelphia Toboggan Company designed and built a new wooden coaster. Frank Hoover, previously known chiefly for overseeing construction for the company, was recommended by company president and veteran coaster designer John Allen to create the ride with minimal input from Allen. Hoover designed an out-and-back coaster filled with airtime called Blue Streak, named after the Sandusky High School athletic team. Near the park's main entrance and marina along Sandusky Bay, Blue Streak opened on May 23, 1964. The coaster rises to 78 feet, features a decorative cupula over the apex of the lift hill, reaches 40 mph after a 72-foot first drop, and includes several smaller bunny hop hills along 2,558 feet of track. Originally natural wood in color, it received its signature blue paint scheme in 1968. Blue Streak is Cedar Point's oldest roller coaster and Frank Hoover's only credited coaster design.
