At Parker's Crossroads, Confederate forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest deployed just south of Wilderness Road in front of the John Parker House, while Union commander Colonel Cyrus Dunham formed his line on high ground beyond what is now I-40. Federal troops charged from that position but were twice driven back by heavy Confederate artillery fire. After repulsing the Union attacks, Forrest advanced, seized the abandoned high ground, and resumed his artillery fire, forcing Dunham's men behind a split-rail fence. As a Union defeat seemed near, Colonel John Fuller arrived with his Ohio Brigade over a low hill, surprising Confederate horseholders in the orchard and field behind the Parker House. In the confusion that followed, the Confederates lost control of the horses, and many were later captured.
