A small wooden building on this site housed John Cannon, Attorney and Counselor-at-Law, in 1862. Christopher Hoppert bought the parcel in 1870 along with several properties to the east and north and opened C.H. Hoppert Bakery, Saloon, and Eating House. In 1892 he built the New Hoppert Building here, with the bakery and home on the next lot east, and the first tenants were Levy and Levitt's Farmer and Mechanics Store. Over the years the building housed a succession of businesses, including a meat market from 1906 under W.P. Adams, W.J. Wyatt, Wyatt and Murch, Jolly and Sons, L. Leavell and Son, and L. Browning; L. Browning's saloon from 1916 until Prohibition; Mac's Pool Hall and Soda Fountain, run by Roy McRary, for twenty-five years beginning in 1920; Airo's Barber Shop in 1920 to 1924 and again from 1964 to 1993; a fountain operated after 1945 by Olan Hare, then C. Hughes, then Woody Wyatt; The Town Shop in 1956; Wilson Paint Center in 1964; a donut shop and snack bar in 1965; Kay Gee Cafe in 1971; Bill and Sharon's Electric in 1973; and Sandwich Alley from 1979 under Doris and Bob Flocchini, then Diana and Shawn Burke. The Hoppert family owned the property from the 1870s, and descendant Cathryn Gates held title in 2002.
