Wyoming’s Indian Meadows Formation dates to the Wasatchian age within the early Eocene and is important chiefly for its rich fossil record. It preserves evidence of mammal life in the state soon after the beginning of the Eocene, including a diverse fauna of primates, early even-toed ungulates, pantodonts, perissodactyls, and other mammals. Fossils from the formation include Absarokius abbotti, Cantius, Diacodexis metsiacus, Coryphodon, Homogalax, Hyopsodus, Phenacodus, Paramys, Esthonyx, Didymictis, Haplomylus, and Parectypodus. Its importance today lies primarily in paleontology as one of Wyoming’s fossil-bearing stratigraphic units from the early Eocene.
