Built in 1905 by W.S. Bowman to resemble a castle with crenellations on the parapet, Bowman Studio served as his studio as well as retail and residential space, replacing an earlier wooden frame studio building. After the Castle was built, Bowman worked from the first floor, and from 1905 to 2005 the main floor housed a photography studio until the last photographer retired in 2005. From 1941 to 1965, osteopathic doctors Gilbert Holt and Orel Hutchins operated the Riverside Maternity Hospital in the building, managed by Phoebe Dykstra. The parapet bears the inscription "W.S. Bowman." Walter Bowman was born in Umatilla County on 8 February 1865, became a photographer in 1887 under the tutelage of T.C. Ward, bought out Ward in 1890 and began operating his own gallery, married Elizabeth M. Carrol in 1896, and died in 1938. His first cousin, Oliver Purl Bowman, also built the Bowman Hotel at the south end of Main Street in 1905. In 1974, the Holt Estate sold the building to local optometrist Robert P. McKenzie for $25,000.
