Darlingtonia State Natural Site is an 18-acre botanical preserve and Oregon state park on U.S. Route 101 north of Florence, protecting a peat bog habitat known for Darlingtonia californica, the carnivorous cobra lily. This unusual plant, also called the western pitcher plant, is the only member of its genus and the only pitcher plant family member found in Oregon. Adapted to acidic, nitrogen-poor bog soils, it traps insects in hollow pitcher-shaped leaves with red-tinted, cobra-like tops. In late spring, purple and yellow flowers rise above the leaves. The site is unique in Oregon’s state park system for being created specifically to protect a single plant species.
