Great Beds Light stands in Raritan Bay about 1 mile offshore from South Amboy, New Jersey, on the Great Beds Shoal, where it marks hazardous shallow water and has become a symbol of the city. Built in 1880 as a sparkplug lighthouse for exposed offshore use, it rests on a 30-foot conical caisson in about 11 feet of water and rises as a five-story tower with a lantern 47 feet high. Its original light used a fourth order Fresnel lens. Formally known as Great Beds Light Station, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 for its architecture, engineering, and importance to transportation and maritime history in the New York–New Jersey harbor estuary.
