The Bienes Museum of the Modern Book, the rare book department of the Broward County Library in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, opened to the public on December 5, 1996 as both a museum and research collection devoted to books, manuscripts, and literary artifacts. Founded with major support from Diane and Michael Bienes and led initially by James A. Findlay, it grew from the Bienes Center for the Literary Arts into a special-collections center with more than 15,000 items. Its holdings include Floridiana, artists’ books, New Deal materials, Florida writers’ papers, alphabet books, pop-up works, comics, and other artifacts of modern book culture.
