Mount Wilson
Nature
Mount Wilson rises in the Spring Mountains of southern Nevada, about 17 miles west of downtown Las Vegas, and is the highest peak within Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Set on Bureau of Land Management land in the Rainbow Mountain Wilderness, it is noted for sandstone cliffs and a commanding position above Red Rock Canyon. Hikers commonly begin at the First Creek trailhead, follow First Creek Canyon west, and then choose from at least two summit routes. Both are strenuous third-class climbs, making the ascent more demanding than an ordinary trail hike. Its importance lies in its prominence, dramatic setting, and protected wilderness location near Las Vegas.
